VED, or car tax, is an annual tax levied on vehicles used on UK public roads, based on fuel type, CO2 emissions, and list price.
Car tax is calculated based on CO2 emissions for the first year, then a standard rate applies. Additional charges may include a diesel surcharge or an expensive car supplement for vehicles over £40,000.
From April 2025, electric vehicles will pay a standard VED rate of £190 annually, with possible supplements for vehicles over £40,000.
Vehicles with a list price over £40,000 pay an additional £390 per year for the first five years after registration, regardless of fuel type.
